Message And if one exceeds that voltage the diode will begin to conduct and potentially fry. In fact a Zener diode is just a regular diode with a very controlled reverse break down voltage.

My guess is this one failed due to overcurrent, as I suspect the reverse break down voltage of this diode is well above 13.8V or so volts that it might see from a backwards battery. But that may be the case...
